Team GB women’s football side secure top spot in Group E after Caroline Weir’s late equaliser clinches draw with Canada, seeing both sides advance to Tokyo Olympics quarter-finals

Team GB women’s football side have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics as Group E winners after fighting back to secure a draw with Canada. 

Hege Riise’s side fell 1-0 behind to Canada when Adriana Leon opened the scoring 11 minutes after the break in Kashima.

Team GB came close to getting an equaliser but Weir’s fierce shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced away from danger with 20 minutes left on the clock.

However, with five minutes left on the clock, Team GB pushed for the equaliser and got it through a huge slice of luck, as Weir’s long-range effort took a huge deflection into the Canadians’ net.
