Tom Brady and Tiger Woods are investors in the team that has brought the dire wolf back from extinction over 10,000 years since they vanished from earth.

The two sporting icons have played a part in the scientific breakthrough made by Colossal Biosciences – a biotechnology and genetic engineering company that Brady is on the cultural advisory board for.

And Woods has followed the legendary NFL quarterback in joining the project to restore the extinct animal made famous in the hit TV show ‘Game of Thrones’.

Earlier this week, Brady said in an Instagram story: ‘So proud of the team for the hard work, passion, and countless hours that have gone into this project!!!’

Colossal Biosciences used ‘deft genetic engineering and ancient, preserved DNA’ to decipher ‘the dire wolf genome’ and rewrite the genetic code of the common gray wolf to match it, according to TIME.

After their work proved successful, two male dire wolves – Romulus and Remus – were born back in October using surrogate domestic hounds.

A female dire wolf called Khaleesi, named after Emilia Clarke’s iconic Game of Thrones character, was also born in January using another surrogate.

As well as Brady and Woods, a number of famous faces from Game of Thrones have also bought into the project, including Sophie Turner, Kit Harrington and author George RR Martin.

‘This massive milestone is the first of many coming examples demonstrating that our end-to-end de-extinction technology stack works,’ Colossal Bioscience CEO Ben Lamm said in a statement, via Business Wire.

‘Our team took DNA from a 13,000 year old tooth and a 72,000 year old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies.’

The biotechnology group is also looking to bring back other extinct species, such as the wooly mammoth, dodo bird and Tasmanian tiger.

Woods has joined the team of investors for Colossal Biosciences amid doubts over his golf future, after he recently underwent surgery on his Achilles.

As for Brady, he is enjoying some downtime after wrapping up his first year as an NFL broadcaster with Fox back in February.
