In the run-up to his 60th birthday, Tom has made precious few concessions to his age, continuing to star in a string of action movies.

During a recent press conference at Cannes when he was asked why he still does his own stunts, he retorted: ‘Would you ask Gene Kelly why he does all his own dancing?’

The movie is also the highest-grossing of Tom’s career, and the first of his films to achieve the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Tom features amid a cast of newer sex symbols like Miles Teller and Glen Powell, but the film also briefly reunites him with Val Kilmer, who played his rival in the original.

One of the subplots involves his character reigniting his romance with an old flame played by Jennifer Connelly, who in real life was 15 when the first film came out.

Tom’s female co-stars from the original movie, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan, were not hired back to act in the sequel.

Back in 2019 Kelly, who got sober and withdrew from Hollywood years ago, candidly discussed not being asked back for Top Gun: Maverick.

‘I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,’ she remarked to Entertainment Tonight.
