Tony Armstrong encourages fans to vote for him to be the first Aboriginal to win a Gold Logie: ‘They would be a positive part of history’

Tony Armstrong has a very good reason for hoping to win the Gold Logie this year.

The ABC News Breakfast host has been nominated for the coveted award, which is for the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, and realises he would be the first Aboriginal person to win if he swing enough votes.

‘Viewers should vote for me because they would then be a positive part of history if that campaign is successful, because no Aboriginal person’s ever won this award before,’ the 34-year-old told TV Tonight this week.

‘I think it’s a bit late for pats on the back around this, but it’d be cool to be the first,’ he added.

The television personality added that he feels ‘humbled’ by the prestigious nod.

‘Being nominated for a Gold Logie is definitely not something that you set out to do, but when it happens, it’s a bit humbling really,’ he said.

Tony earlier revealed the one thing he doesn’t like about being up for the gold gong.

He told viewers he did not like smiling in photos used to advertise voting.

Co-host Michael Rowland teased Armstrong after sharing a promotional photo of the hunky star frowning.

‘How sizzling is that [photo],’ Rowland joked, adding: ‘When they asked you to pose for that, what did they say to you? What sort of look were they after?’

Armstrong responded: ‘They normally say, ‘we want you to smile more’. And I don’t like smiling too much in photos, as you all know.’

‘Fun fact,’ Rowland teased Armstrong.

Rowland also shared a behind-the-scenes video in which Armstrong can be seen watching a segment promoting his Gold Logie nomination.

Armstrong faces stiff competition in the Gold Logie race.

The other contenders include Robert Irwin, and his I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here co-host Julia Morris.

Seven’s Larry Emdur, Sonia Kruger, Asher Keddie, and Andy Lee are also up for the prestigious gong.

In addition to his Gold Logie nomination, Irwin, along with Morris, Emdur, Kruger, and Armstrong, are also vying for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter.

This category features another strong contender, Hamish Blake.

The 64th annual Logie Awards will be hosted by comedian Sam Pang and will take place in Sydney on August 18. This year, the event will be broadcast on Channel 7.
