- Sportsmail runs through a list of biggest two-legged wins in Champions League
Manchester City and Liverpool both effectively sealed their passage into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with sizable first leg victories this week with both now able to look ahead to the home ties in relaxed fashion.
The Citizens sailed to a 4-0 victory against Swiss champions Basle while Liverpool put five past Portuguese champions Porto, but will Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp look to rest stars in the second leg or put their opponents to the sword?
Should they opt for the latter, both clubs have a chance to make Champions League history with the biggest aggregate wins in the competition’s history, but they have a lot of work to do to match the current record.

Bayern Munich hold the record with a winning margin of 11 goals. Having beaten Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in the away leg, they returned to their home ground and smashed seven past the hapless Portuguese side. A consolation strike gave a final aggregate score of 12-1, which is by far and away the biggest two-legged win ever.
The next biggest winning margin is eight goals and shared by three clubs: Lyon (vs Weder Bremen 2005), Barcelona (vs Bayer Lerverkusen 2012) and Bayern Munich (vs Arsenal 2017).
Coincidentally, all three of the eight-goal margins were produced with a 10-2 aggregate scoreline and Bayern Munich’s win over Arsenal last season is the most recent addition on the list.
It is also the second of six appearances for the German side in the top 10.
The most impressive victory undoubtedly came in 2013 as Bayern Munich knocked Barcelona out in the semi-finals with an aggregate victory of 7-0. Not only is it the only result at that late stage of the competition but is also the only victory against a side to have also lifted the trophy.
Sporting Lisbon lost the first leg 5-0 and the second leg 7-1 to succumb to a record 12-1 defeat
Lionel Messi’s Barcelona have just one entry, their 10-2 victory over Bayern Leverkusen (2012)
Bayern Munich stunned Barcelona in the semi-finals of 2012-13 with a 7-0 aggregate victory
The German side, guided by Jupp Heynckes, would go onto win the tournament by beating Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley.
Real Madrid are the only other team in the top 10 and make two appearances with a 9-2 victory over Schalke 04 (2014) and an 8-2 win over APOEL Nicosia (2012) coming in at sixth and 10th on the list respectively.
However, the reigning champions of the competition are likely to see their second entry chalked off the top 10 list following the return legs in three weeks time.
Klopp’s men need to win by just a two-goal margin to leap into eighth place and few would bet against them scoring even more than that.
Manchester City, the highest scoring team in Europe with 79 goals in the Premier League, also need just three without reply to stake their own claim in the top 10 list.
