Staff on the train had spoken to the two males in relation to antisocial behaviour before they exited the train at the station before the assault happened, police said.

Inspector Stephen O’Donnell said the men appeared to be ‘looking to cause trouble’.

‘They were engaging in anti-social behaviour, they were drunk or drug-affected, they were causing issues onboard the train.’

He said it was not clear how or why the pair had come into contact with Mr O’Neill once they left the station.

The pair have been urged to hand themselves into police.

Anyone with information relating the incidents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
