TOP SPIN ON THE TEST: Stuart Broad pulls clear of Courtney Walsh in all-time Test wickets list… but Joe Root dropping Will Young proves England have one of the WORST slip cordons in the game

  • Stuart Broad passed Courtney Walsh’s 519 scalps with Devon Conway wicket
  • Only five bowlers are now ahead of the England quick in the all-time Test list
  • Since the start of 2019, England have dropped 26 of their 114 slip chances
  • Trent Boult became the fourth New Zealander to take 500 international wickets

New Zealand took command of the second Test at Edgbaston after finishing the second day against England on 229 for three.

Will Young and Devon Conway both made scores in the 80s after England had been bowled out for 303, with Kiwi veteran Ross Taylor finishing unbeaten and four short of a half-century at the close of play.

Here, Sportsmail’s Lawrence Booth looks at the main takeaways from the action at Edgbaston.

When Stuart Broad trapped New Zealand captain Tom Latham lbw for six, he moved level with West Indian great Courtney Walsh on 519 Test wickets.

And he drew clear with the wicket of Devon Conway. Only five bowlers are now ahead of him in the all-time Test list.

There is another list in which Broad still trails Walsh – but he did manage to close the gap yesterday with his 37th Test duck, moving clear of New Zealand bunny Chris Martin. Only Walsh, with 43, is in front of Broad.

The catch dropped by Joe Root to reprieve Will Young on seven off Olly Stone confirmed England’s status as one of worst slip-catching teams in Test cricket.

Since the start of 2019, they have dropped 26 of the 114 slip chances that have come their way, a success rate of 76.36%.

Only Bangladesh (76%) and West Indies (75%) have fared worse. New Zealand are top of the list, having caught 47 of their 52 chances – a success rate of 90.38%.
