Tori Spelling confirms her dad was the reason her character remained a virgin on Beverly Hills 90210

Tori Spelling first starred in Beverly Hills 90210 more than three decades ago.

But she is still learning a lot about her character Donna Martin.

The 50-year-old mother of five, who took her daughters Stella, 14 and Hattie, 11, to an event celebrating season two of the hit series Cruel Summer, has finally learned why her character Donna remained a virgin so much longer than the rest of the characters.

In the latest episode of the 9021OMG podcast, Tori and co-host Jennie Garth interviewed producer and writer Charles Rosin for the details.

The series about a group of teens living in the exclusive Beverly Hills area ran from 1990 to 2000.

Tori’s late father, Aaron Spelling, was a producer on the show, and it was revealed he was the one behind the decision to keep Donna chaste.

‘I remember very clearly when he said to me, you know, that Donna should be a virgin,’ the Emmy nominated writer said.

‘And it was like, “Yes, absolutely she should.”’

‘We just went, ‘Oh, yeah, that makes perfect sense!”’ he continued, ‘Because we were able now to differentiate you.’

‘You would be dressed, you know, provocatively, stylishly – but it didn’t matter,’ he added, referring to Donna’s wardrobe. ‘Because certainly, if you were, for whatever reason, a virgin at that point, you could dress like that…You could blend in, but not actually be “doing the deed” as it were.’

Tori said she had always ‘suspected’ her dad was behind the idea.

‘I never knew where it came from,’ Tori told the Charles and Jennie.

‘I always suspected, and people say, like, “He kept his daughter virgin.”’

The actress shared in a 2013 interview with Vulture that she felt they storyline actually proved to be helpful to teens struggling with making a decision to go all the way.

‘I think she stayed a virgin because once we established that she was a fan favorite, people really started relating to her,’ the Emmy nominee explained at the time.

‘Teens constantly would approach me and tell me that they were virgins and they had times where they were scared that being a virgin would make them seem uncool, but then Donna made it okay.’

Donna was finally deflowered in season seven.

‘We knew it was inevitable,’ Tori said to the outlet.

‘I think at one point I jokingly said, “Come on, Dad. It’s time.”’
