Tottenham and UEFA in talks over which stadium club will use for Champions League knockout stages

Tottenham and UEFA locked in talks over which stadium club will use for Champions League knockout stages… as Manchester United postpone ballot for away clash due to uncertainty

  • Tottenham and UEFA remain in talks about where they will play after Christmas
  • Spurs progressed through to the knockout stages of the Champions League
  • The deadline to submit their home venue is on Monday but UEFA are ‘flexible’
  • Meanwhile, Man United postponed ticket ballot for away trip due to uncertainty

Talks are ongoing between Tottenham Hotspur and UEFA over which stadium the Premier League club will be using for the remainder of their Champions League campaign.

Spurs — currently playing at Wembley thanks to ongoing delays to their new, 62,000-capacity home — qualified for the last-16 stage following Tuesday night’s dramatic 1-1 draw at Barcelona.

They are yet to set an opening date for their new venue although currently the December 29 visit of Wolves is the last match which has been announced as being played under the arch.

In normal circumstances, Tottenham would have to advise UEFA by Monday, the day of the draw, which stadium they would be using not only for the last-16 home tie, but also for the remainder of the competition should they progress.

However, Sportsmail understands that Spurs have already been told that the governing body is flexible about the situation and will work with the club to find a positive solution.

First-leg fixtures take place on 12 and 13 February and 19 and 20 of the same month. Earlier this month, Danny Rose described playing at Wembley as ‘just not nice any more’ after just 33,012 turned up for Spurs’s 3-1 victory over Southampton.

Following the draw at the Nou Camp, manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed the prospect of playing Champions League football at their new home.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have postponed their ticket ballot for January’s away fixture at Spurs due to the uncertainty over the venue.

Tottenham hoped that the Premier League fixture against Jose Mourinho’s side on January 13 would be the first game at their new home.

But, according to The Times, United season-ticket holders were emailed on Wednesday morning to say the ballot had been postponed for the game, adding that Spurs had not given any indication about when the venue for the match would be decided.

‘We’re unable to complete the ballot today as the venue for the fixture has not yet been confirmed,’ United’s email to their fans on Wednesday read.

‘Unfortunately, we have not been given any indication when we will receive confirmation of the venue, allocation and ticket prices.’
