Now, Conte has hit back by sharing clips of all three goals on Saturday night onto his Instagram page with the caption: ‘Counter-attacks?!? Maybe not…’

Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back on the half-hour mark but Spurs talisman Kane restored their lead after another passage of play which originated from their own box.

Riyad Mahrez looked to have rescued a point for the hosts when he beat Lloris from the penalty spot late on, but there was still time for more drama as Kane struck the winner right at the death.

The England captain headed the ball home after a 12-pass move which included Spurs recycling the ball with City set up defensively.

After defeat and conceding ground to Liverpool in the title race, Guardiola said: ‘After going behind, they defended so deep and so compact – it was incredible.

‘They don’t lose the ball with Harry Kane and can run as well with Son and Kulusevski.

Guardiola said Tottenham 'created a lot of space to run on the counter-attack' in 3-2 victory

Guardiola said Tottenham ‘created a lot of space to run on the counter-attack’ in 3-2 victory

‘I think we played well. We created a lot of chances. I can’t say anything wrong about the team because we were there all the time. But it was difficult.

‘They played the way I expected them to play. They were good in the build-up and created a lot of space to run on the counter-attack, but in general we coped well and played a good game.

‘Everyone knows what Kane gives. For the first goal we defended the pass inside badly, but after 10 to 15 minutes we created a lot of chances. Lloris was brilliant. We have to score more.’

The shock result at the Etihad meant that City’s lead at the top was cut to just six points following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Norwich.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have the chance to close that to just three points when they welcome Leeds to Anfield on Wednesday night.
