Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino delivered a cryptic metaphor on the eve of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
This will be Pochettino’s third Champions League campaign with Spurs — the first saw his side exit in the group phase, but they took 16 points from a possible 18 last season before narrowly losing to Juventus in the first knockout round.
Speaking in Milan on Monday, Pochettino said: ‘[Experience] is like a cow who sees a train every day for ten years crossing in front [of her], and if you ask the cow when the train is coming she’s not going to answer.’

Although it is not clear what Pochettino meant, the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick came up with a probable explanation. He tweeted: ‘I think he meant: the experience of playing in this type of big CL game is all very well but it means nothing if you don’t learn from it in the future.’
Despite seeing a remarkable improvement in last season’s European campaign compared with the previous year, Spurs still blew a 3-2 lead aggregate lead to lose to Juventus.
And they were also punished for individual mistakes in away matches at Real Madrid and Juventus, conceding three penalties across those two games.
Serge Aurier, who was guilty of giving away two of those penalties, will start at the San Siro against Inter, after fellow right back Kieran Trippier was left in England to rest along with Toby Alderweireld.
Pochettino’s weird words on Monday evoked memories of Eric Cantona’s famous ‘Seagulls’ speech, which he gave in 1995 after being hit with a ban for kicking an abusive football fan at Crystal Palace.
‘When seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea,’ said the Manchester United icon before calming standing up and walking out of his press conference.
