Son Heung-min’s World Cup dream could be in tatters as he needs surgery on a fractured eye socket.

The South Korean suffered the injury during Tottenham’s 2-1 Champions League win over Marseille on Wednesday and he will undergo surgery to stabilise the fracture.

Spurs did not put a timeframe on his return, but with South Korea playing Uruguay in the World Cup on November 24, the 30-year-old’s participation is now in severe doubt.

A Spurs statement read: ‘We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye

‘The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

‘Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.’

The news will come as a blow to Antonio Conte’s side ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool.

Conte will be desperate for positive news regarding his star forward with his options in attack already ravaged due to injury.

Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are currently unavailable meaning Harry Kane and Lucas Moura are Tottenham’s only fit forwards if Son cannot play this weekend.

Meanwhile, key defender Cristian Romero has suffered a muscle strain that is expected to keep him out until the World Cup.

Conte’s players were given Wednesday and Thursday off as a reward for the 2-1 win in Marseille that booked their place in the Champions League last 16.

After the defeat in against Sporting in Lisbon, the Spurs manager made his players report for an 11am training session despite the fact they’d arrived back from Portugal just a few hours earlier.

But Conte showed his softer after returning from France during the early hours of Wednesday morning by giving them two consecutive days off ahead of the game against Liverpool on Sunday.
