Tottenham hero Gary Mabbutt reaches incredible milestone in his bid to phone as many elderly and vulnerable fans as possible during Covid pandemic as he passes 3,000 calls – having started back in March 2020

  • The Tottenham legend called fans in isolation and celebrating special occasions
  • Mabbutt revealed he’s spent two hours a day speaking to elderly Tottenham fans 
  • He admitted he was touched by fans messages and was happy to support them  

Tottenham legend and club ambassador Gary Mabbutt has clocked up over 3,000 calls to elderly and vulnerable Spurs fans during the on going Covid pandemic.  

Since March of last year, Mabbutt who made 629 appearances for the north London club; has made daily calls to fans who have been in isolation or celebrating special occasions.  

A selection of supporters who had received a call were invited to send in videos to say thank you to the club legend for his efforts.

Tottenham fan Graham Sharp said: ‘It was a real pleasure to receive Gary’s call on my 75th birthday. He was so generous with his time, and I will never forget his kindness. He deserves all the respect and thanks that we can give. Thank you, Gary.’

And fellow Spurs supporter Ray Gates added: ‘Thank you for all the hard work you put in for being an ambassador of our football club. 

‘You made a phone call to me in January when I was COVID positive – it was a massive pick me up to hear your voice and have a chat about the club. I hear you have made over 3,000 calls to fans now – amazing. We want to say thank you, to you, for picking us up throughout the pandemic.’

After watching the emotional messages Mabbutt told Tottenham’s official website: ‘Over the last 16 months, I’ve spent two hours a day speaking to fans from the age of 70 to 95.’ The club ambassador revealed.

‘By just talking to someone for a few minutes a day, you get a good understanding of whether they are in good spirits or struggling. 

‘After what has been a challenging year for so many, being able to bring a small sense of joy to our fans has been incredibly worthwhile. 

‘It was a great surprise to see and hear from some of them and I look forward to speaking to many more fans in the future.’
