Tottenham made a mistake selling right back Kyle Walker-Peters, says Ian Wright

Tottenham made a mistake selling right-back Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton, insists Ian Wright… and England legend is ‘absolutely made up’ over his call-up by Gareth Southgate

  • Kyle Walker-Peter joined Southampton from Tottenham for £12m in 2020
  • Defender has established himself as a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side
  • The 24-year-old right-back received his first England call-up this week

Ian Wright says Tottenham made a mistake by selling defender Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton in 2020.

The 24-year-old right back, a product of Tottenham’s academy, earned his first England call up this week for the friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.

Walker Peters has established himself as a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, having played 73 times for the St Mary’s outfit.

Kyle Walker-Peter has made 73 appearances for Southampton since joining for £12m in 2020

He initially joined the Saints on loan in January 2020, before sealing a £12million switch from North London in the following summer.

Spurs tried and failed to sign a right-back in January after Serge Aurier, Matt Doherty or Emerson Royal failed to convince.

Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Arsenal legend Wright expressed his confusion.

‘Kyle Walker-Peters. Its great to see him. I remember watching him at Tottenham and I’m thinking they got rid of him and brought in Serge Aurier.

‘When I watched Serge for a couple of games I’m thinking ‘I’m sorry, Kyle Walker-Peters is a better player’,’ he said.

‘They brought Emerson Royal in and I’m saying I’m sorry, he’s a better player. And even with Doherty, who does great stuff going forward, I’ve watched Walker-Peters and I’m glad he’s got the call-up.

‘I’m thinking why have Tottenham got rid of him when you see how he plays?

‘For him to get the call-up – I am absolutely made up. For me, that helps him, that gives him that buzz that makes him go ‘yes’.

‘Moving from Tottenham – would he have really wanted to? He probably had to because they wanted him out.

‘He’s gone to Southampton – not so fashionable – and continued with great form and he’s been rewarded.’
