A Tottenham mascot was heard making a cheeky plea for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk to join the club amid the club’s defensive injury crisis.

Several Tottenham mascots were seen lining up in the tunnel pre-match ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

As Van Dijk made his way back to the Liverpool dressing room following his warm-up, the Dutchman received a surprising request from one.

‘Van Dijk come to Tottenham we haven’t got any good defenders at the moment,’ the mascot was heard shouting.

Van Dijk was seen smiling in response to the comment, which was picked up by the Sky Sports cameras.

Sky Sports presenter Mark Chapman was left in hysterics at the mascot’s bold appeal.

‘The mascots are being very honest to the Liverpool players,’ Chapman said.

‘They are the best value mascots in the league at Tottenham, they always entertain every single week when they are at home’.

The mascot’s comment comes amid a defensive injury crisis at Tottenham with first choice centre back pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero still on the sidelines.

Spurs are also without the back-up option of Ben Davies, while first choice left back Destiny Udogie is also sidelined.

Recent matches have seen Tottenham forced into a makeshift centre back partnership, with midfielder Archie Gray partnering Radu Dragusin.

Full back Djed Spence has also come in from the cold in recent weeks and started the semi-final first leg at left back.

Tottenham mascots had previously earned attention in 2023 after several were seen warming up in the tunnel ahead of match against Newcastle amid another injury crisis at the club.Ā
