Tourists left stunned by encounter with polar bears

A group of tourists were left stunned when three majestic polar bears wandered up to them through the snow.

The beautiful moment at sunrise was captured on video as the curious bears over – a mother and her two cubs – were spotted sauntering across the wilderness of the Canadian Arctic.

An electric fence had been erected in order to ensure the safety of the explorers from the great white bears.

The video was taken by David Briggs, a Senior Expedition Leader at Arctic Kingdom, on Polar Bear Migration Fly-In Photo Safari.

He said: ‘It’s such a unique experience people get giddy with excitement, laugh, hug each other and give high-fives.

‘It truly is an unbelievable experience and one that people feel privileged to witness.

‘The reality of being so close to these majestic wild animals is incredible and one that I never tire of.

‘It was a beautiful crisp clear morning when we saw this mother and her two 2-year-old cubs approach from the sea ice.

‘We had seen them from a fair distance away and were quite optimistic they would come towards our camp.

‘The reason for our optimism was because of the cubs. At this age they are super curious and boldly move forward to the focus of their attention.’

Mr Briggs said: ‘We had lots of time to get ourselves and guest prepared and in good viewing locations along the electric fence.

‘It couldn’t have played out better, with the cubs coming up close during the sunrise, and the air being so cold and crisp that you could see their breath.

‘This experience was magical as the cubs repeatedly came back towards the fence giving our guests a memory that will last a lifetime.

‘Our Inuit guides and Expedition Leaders – including myself – are very experienced in managing these encounters.

‘The bears are observed from a far distance away and as they approach we are looking closely at their behavior, physical condition and demeanor.’
