Since the pandemic, it’s become pretty standard practice to book a restaurant, pub or bar before going.

But would you be prepared to book a spot at the beach?

Tourists will soon have no choice but to plan ahead to visit one idyllic beauty spot in Italy.

Visitors travelling to Tuerredda Beach, a beautiful crescent-shaped bay in Sardinia, will soon be required to book their place via an app.

Numbers are already restricted to 1,100 people a day in summer, but the local council now wants to introduce further regulations.

The beach, which is located near the town of Teulada, has been described as Caribbean-like due to its glistening white sand but often becomes overcrowded during summer.

Angelo Milia, the mayor of Tuelada, told local media: ‘We hope to start with the new system as early as July.’

The app was one idea discussed at an overtourism summit in Italy which was attended by mayors from many of the country’s leading tourist destinations, including Capri and Positano.

Capri’s mayor, Paolo Falco, has said he would like to introduce an hourly limit on ferry numbers.

Falco said: ‘It is essential that our municipality has a say in the hourly timetable of maritime connections.

‘On Capri, we want to protect to the fullest those who come to visit us and ensure a quality experience for all.’

Tourists now regularly outnumber residents on the island of Capri during the summer months.

Michele Cereghini, mayor of Pinzolo in the Italian Alps, said: ‘We are well aware of the value and importance of tourism for the growth of our areas, but we are equally aware of the need to guarantee the wellbeing of our residents.

‘It is the concept of quality tourism that we want to guarantee and preserve.’
