Tradie who sliced off his thumb in horror saw accident has it reattached to his GROIN – and now it grows pubic hair

  •  Surgeons said the best way to save his thumb was to graft skin from his groin
  •  His thumb was attached for four weeks and grows pubic hair after fully healing

A tradie who severed his thumb during a workplace accident has revealed how it now grows pubic hair after he had a very unusual skin graft.

Peter Carter, a carpenter from Auckland, was working on a piece of furniture in his driveway when he accidentally sliced off his left thumb.

Doctors determined that the best way to salvage his thumb was to use a skin graft from his groin.

They then surgically attached his thumb to his groin so the tissue could repair itself, the New Zealand Herald reported.

After his accident Mr Carter was rushed to hospital by his elderly aunt and uncle, who had managed to find the severed thumb at the end of the driveway.

Initially surgeons considered using one of Mr Carter’s toes to replace the lost finger but then decided he did not meet the criteria.

Instead they had to opt for an unusual surgery, known as a pedicled groin flap.

The following morning Mr Carter underwent a five hour operation where a piece of skin was cut from his groin and used to cover the remaining part of his thumb.

The finger was then sewn onto his groin and left for four weeks, allowing the tissue to properly attach.

‘I got the fright of my life when I woke up and I went to scratch my face but couldn’t because my thumb was attached just to the left of my man products,’ Mr Carter said.

He explained that he spent three weeks in hospital where his unusual circumstances were a ‘novelty’ for the nurses.

After a week of living at home ‘in a T-shirt with the side cut out of it’ Mr Carter had his stitches removed.

His thumb healed successfully and was even growing pubic hair. Mr Carter called the thumb ‘the gift that keeps on giving’.
