Tragedy strikes Queensland school zone: Woman dies after collision with stolen car as driver flees the scene

A woman was killed after colliding with a stolen Mercedes on the Sunshine Coast on Friday morning. 

The crash happened at around 7.20 am on Windsor Road in Burnside, near the Sunshine Coast, in the state’s south-east.

The woman died after her Nissan Micra, crashed into an allegedly stolen Mercedes hatchback.

The Mercedes was allegedly stolen earlier this morning in Landsborough, a town 30 kilometres south of Burnside.

Queensland Police said the driver of the Mercedes allegedly ran away from the scene before he was found a short time later.

He has been taken into custody and is believed to be assisting police with their enquiries.

‘A man aged in his 20s is in police custody following a serious traffic crash at Burnside on the Sunshine Coast this morning,’ the spokesperson said. 

‘A female driver was trapped in one of the vehicles while the male driver of the second vehicle allegedly fled the scene on foot’. 

‘Police searched the area and were able to apprehend the man at a nearby residence’. 

No charges have been laid. 

A part of Windsor Road has been closed until further notice as Queensland Police investigate the incident.   

The crash happened near Nambour Special School and a day care centre is located close by. 

The street was littered with debris from the two cars following the crash.

The Nissan Micra was seen mounted on the footpath with it’s bonnet smashed in, with parts of the vehicle’s front and back door’s crumpled. 

The Mercedes was seen in the middle of the road, also with a badly damaged bonnet. 

Police are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage, to come forward.
