Tragic coincidence for Sam Kerr’s family after her grandmother is struck by a ute while getting off a bus – as heartbroken Matildas star breaks her silence

Sam Kerr has broken her silence after her grandmother was struck by a ute on Friday.

Coral Kerr, 89, is understood to have been stepping off a bus in the suburb of Palmyra at around 11am, when the incident took place.

The driver mounted the kerb in an attempt to overtake the bus before he hit the 89-year-old.

The incident took place just metres away from Coral’s house. She was subsequently rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition where she underwent surgery for a broken femur, ankle and hip. It is understood she also suffered a concussion during the crash.

A 63-year-old man has been charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm following the incident and is due to appear before the Fremantle Magistrates Court in Western Australia on February 4.

Kerr and her father, Roger, had flown to New South Wales to celebrate the marriage of Matildas team-mate Emily Van Egmond and her partner Kat Thompson.

The pair are understood to have learned of the news at the wedding reception and have subsequently flown back to Perth. Kerr, alongside her parents, Roger and Roxanne were met at Perth airport by her brother, Daniel.

In heartbreaking circumstances for the Kerr family, the incident took place at the same intersection that Coral’s husband, Denzil, a former featherweight boxer, was tragically struck by a car and killed 20 years ago, according to 9News.

Kerr has subsequently taken to Instagram to thank fans on social media for their support.

‘Thank you for all the messages, love and prayers for my nan x,’ the Chelsea player published on her Instagram story.

Coral’s neighbour, Mary Ivey, recounted the moment the incident took place.

‘She was one side of the road and he was the other, so it’s really a tragic set of circumstances,’ neighbour Mary Ivey said.

After coming to her aid, Ivey said: ‘She started to come to and recognised me.

‘And [she] was able to talk to us and let us know, you know, that she was in pain.’

Kerr’s father, Roger, was unable to give an update on the situation of his mother after arriving in Perth, but said his daughter had been left shocked by the incident.

‘She’s a bit shocked,’ Roger told reporters, speaking on his daughter Sam.

‘She’s gone straight there to see her grandmother now and we’ll follow.’

Images from the incident show that the ute which is alleged to have struck Kerr’s grandmother incurred extensive damage to its bonnet after it is said to have struck a power pole before hitting Coral.

The news comes after the Chelsea striker and her partner Kristie Mewis, who plays for West Ham, had announced that they were expecting a baby.

They had returned to Perth to celebrate Christmas with Kerr’s family earlier this month.

Kerr is currently sidelined until around March 2025, as she recovers from an ACL injury.

The 31-year-old and her father had posed for pictures alongside Mewis, Katie McCabe and Caitlin Foord during Van Egmond’s wedding ceremony on Friday.
