Traumatised Netflix viewers vow to go vegan after watching stomach-churning new documentary

A new documentary about the problem of deadly illnesses carried by food in the US has dropped on Netflix and has left shocked viewers vowing to go vegan.

Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food was released on the streaming platform on August 2, and has left viewers confessing that they were left ‘traumatised’.

The film features interviews with experts and victims’ families as filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig investigates how the American food industry’s systemic failings lead to outbreaks of food-borne pathogens with deadly consequences.

The film made a number of stomach-turning revelations including that companies are able to sell chicken which is contaminated with salmonella.

One expert even said: ‘Your primary assumption should be that [supermarket chicken] contains pathogens such as salmonella.’

Sharing their shock at the new documentary, viewers were quick to take to social media to confess that they wanted to turn vegan after watching it.

One viewer said: ‘This Poisoned documentary on Netflix makes me wanna turn vegan.’

While another added: ‘Poisoned on Netflix has TRAUMATIZED me.’

A third tweeted: ‘I urge everybody to go watch poisoned on Netflix. It’s scary to think about what type of food we’re putting in out bodies.’

Another commented: ‘This is scary… Anyone of us can end up in hospital and even die just by eating a contaminated piece of lettuce or an undercooked piece of meat.’

Jeff Benedict’s book – Poisoned: The True Story Of The Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed The Way Americans Eat – was the inspiration behind the documentary.

However others, while moved by the film, were confident that the harrowing tales would still not be enough to convert them.

One said: ‘I’ll still eat what I eat but to see how little regulations there are is pretty eye opening.’

Another joked: ‘This Netflix documentary is scary as hell… imma still eat it though.’

One of the ultimate messages of the documentary is that if the US public made their voices heard, regulators may be forced to enforce more stringent rules around food production and safety.

Soechtig has already released other documentaries exposing many elements of the food industry, including 2009’s Tapped and Fed Up in 2014.
