Travel chaos after man is killed by a rush-hour train

Thousands of commuters were plunged into travel chaos after a man was killed by a rush-hour train.

The victim was hit by a carriage at East Croydon, south London, at 5.57pm today as a service headed from London Bridge to Brighton.

Pictures have since emerged on social media of large crowds of people staring at departure boards at Gatwick Airport and London Victoria.

Southern rail said that services would be ‘heavily disrupted as a result of the incident.

The train company wrote: ‘Following a person hit by a train, platforms 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 at East Croydon have now reopened.

‘Platform 3 is still closed while staff deal with a signal failure.

‘Services will be heavily disrupted until the end of service as we work to recover the service.’

A British Transport Police said officers were yet to identify the man killed by the train.

A spokesman said: ‘Medics from the London Ambulance Service also attended and a male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

‘Officers are currently working to identify the person and inform his next of kin. A file will be prepared for the coroner

‘The train involved was the 17.57 London Bridge to Brighton service and the line was handed back at 19.27.’
