Travellers dump lorryloads of commercial waste in prison

Menacing travellers have broken into the grounds of a former prison and dumped lorryloads of commercial waste.

Pictures show piles of wood, plastic and metal covering the site of Holloway Prison in north London where 20 caravans and cars are parked. 

The jail was the largest women’s prison in Europe until it was permanently closed last year be sold for housing.  

Menacing travellers have broken into a the grounds of a former prison and dumped lorryloads of commercial waste

One neighbour told the Islington Gazette: ‘There’s an unbelievable amount of rubbish and it doesn’t look like they are planning to leave anytime soon.

‘They also have a dog that barks all day and night, which is annoying people more than the rubbish.’

Another added: ‘They have broken the chains for the car park and been making a nuisance. They are fly-tipping and have dogs running around chasing the people walking through.’    

A prison service spokesman said: ‘A group of individuals are illegally camping on prison land at HMP Holloway.

‘The police have attended and we are closely monitoring the situation, including whether legal action is required to recover possession of the site.’
