A trio of camouflaged snakes pictured in their natural habitat have left social media users baffled and questioning their vision – but can you spot them in these images?

The pictures shows what appears to be a shallow area of a lake, where rocks, twigs, and leaves can be seen.

But three snakes were lurking there in the image taken by Ben Morgan, 64, at a 35-acre lake in Cordova, Tennessee.

Mr Morgan took the picture last week before challenging social media users to locate all the snakes.

‘I was just out finishing my morning run at the time,’ Ben, a business owner, told the NeedToKnow site. ‘I spotted them after looking closely into the lake, and decided to snap a pic.

‘When they’re in the water, they can be hard to spot, but I was fortunate that a couple were only partially submerged.

‘I think I have an eye for them, having grown up around lakes and rivers in the area.’

Hundreds of Facebook users took to the comments section to share their guesses, with the majority unable to locate all three reptiles.

Linda said: ‘Too many,’ while Beverley joked: ‘Four? What kinds are these snakes, I’ll be relocating and need to know.’

‘I see four but I thought the experts claim snakes don’t congregate,’ added Keith.

Julie said: ‘I saw two, I might be going to the ER, I didn’t see the others,’ while Joanne added: ‘I think I see at least five.’

The trio have been identified as non-venomous, common water snakes, called nerodia sipedons.

Common water snakes can be found across the southern United States and northern Mexico and are considered the largest of all American water snakes, measuring up to 5ft in length.

The snakes are non-venomous but their bite is painful thanks to rows of sharp teeth, designed to grip on to their prey, which largely consists of fish and amphibians.

If threatened the snakes will hiss and flatten themselves to appear larger.

They are also known to release a foul-smelling musk, spray fecal matter, and even regurgitate food to put off attackers.

Ben added: ‘As our home is located adjacent to this lake, we have seen a variety of snakes over the years.

‘In the springtime, they are usually out sunning early in the morning.

‘I have seen water snakes before, but never more than one at a time..’
