Troy Deeney believes England ‘cannot afford’ to not call up Trent Alexander-Arnold for Euro 2020 – and insisted Harry Kane will be desperate for the full back to return.

Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold was a shock absentee from the Three Lions’ group for their three World Cup qualifiers and faces stiff competition on the right.

But Watford ace Deeney, writing in his column for The Sun, says his dead-ball prowess and ‘picture-perfect’ crosses make him a prime candidate for selection.

‘As debate rages over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England axing, one thing is certain in my mind – Harry Kane will want the Liverpool man at the Euros,’ Deeney said.

‘Any centre forward in the world would relish the trademark delivery Alexander-Arnold produced in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Arsenal last weekend.

‘And any centre-forward would hope for a team-mate with Trent’s dead-ball ability at set-pieces.’

Deeney waxed lyrical about the superb cross whipped in by Alexander Arnold for Liverpool’s breakthrough at the Emirates and said the goal was ‘almost unstoppable’.

Boss Gareth Southgate has been handed a welcome dilemma over the right back position, however, with several candidates pressing home their claims for a start.

The dip in form suffered by Alexander-Arnold this campaign was highlighted by Southgate as the reason behind his axing – much to the chagrin of Jurgen Klopp.

Deeney has unveiled his personal choices, with Manchester City man Kyle Walker, Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka making the cut.

England fielding a back five, which was utilised to great success at the 2018 World Cup, has been mooted and Deeney believes the system would suit Alexander-Arnold.

‘Remember, this is a player who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League and Premier League triumphs,’ he added.

‘And even if his form has been more bumpy this season, England cannot afford to leave out someone of that quality.’
