Troy Delmege could get gum disease, says dentist

He sent fans into hysterics with his frantic teeth-brushing technique on Married At First Sight, before confessing he only cleans his teeth once a day and doesn’t floss.

And Troy Delmege’s bizarre dental hygiene habits have been blasted by a dentist, who told Daily Mail Australia on Thursday he could suffer gum disease and decay in the future.

Dr Luke Cronin, of Quality Dental, also criticised the reality oddball’s decision to brush only in the mornings because brushing at night ‘makes him hungry’.

Oh dear: Troy Delmege’s bizarre dental hygiene habits have been blasted by a dentist, who told Daily Mail Australia he could suffer gum disease and decay in the future

Troy had previously told TheFIX: ‘I brush in the morning. When I brush at night I find it triggers hunger and when I go to bed I don’t want to go to bed hungry.’

But Dr Cronin countered: ‘There is no evidence to suggest that brushing your teeth makes you feel hungry. I wonder if he brushes his teeth before or after breakfast.

‘You should be brushing after eating so the poor guy must never be satisfied.’

IT manager Troy, 35, left fans baffled after brushing his teeth with an extremely aggressive teeth on Married At First Sight – after eating a can of tuna.

‘Troy brushing his teeth actually makes me want to vomit’, one fan wrote on Twitter, responding to the bizarre moment the groom freshened up ahead of his wedding.

Possibly nervous about his impending nuptials, toothpaste was seen dribbling down Troy’s chin as he kept frantically brushing his pearly whites.

Discussing his vigorous brushing, Dr Cronin said: ‘It‘s certainly an amusing way to brush your teeth. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth in small circles with the toothbrush on a 45 degree angle to the gum.

‘If you brushed your teeth that vigorously every day you could cause damage to your gums and the external layer of enamel on your teeth.

‘Troy’s excessive use of toothpaste also creates foam that prevents you from seeing where you are brushing.’

Troy also confessed that he had used an electric toothbrush ‘for a few years’ but threw it away because he could do ‘a better job’.

Giving his opinion on the oddball’s decision to go manual, Dr Cronin said using an electric toothbrush will be ‘far better’.

Troy also revealed he believed that brushing his teeth is ‘good for your skin’ and ‘doesn’t floss’.

Discussing his claims about teeth brushing helping his complexion, Dr Cronin said: ‘I am not a dermatologist but if toothpaste was good for your skin then there would already be a market for it in creams and lotions.

‘If he’s referring to his technique then I hate to burst his bubble but there is no correlation between excessive brushing and healthy skin.’

He added that flossing is an ‘essential part’ of anyone’s oral hygiene routine and failing to do could lead to gum disease and decay.
