This is the bizarre moment firefighters jumped behind the wheel of a burning garbage truck to move it off a bridge, while their colleagues used a fire engine to extinguish the moving blaze-on-wheels.

The truck, which was travelling over Bolte Bridge in Melbourne at about 1pm, was pictured driving along the busy road with smoke pouring out of it.

Firefighters made sure the truck was safe to drive and safely evacuated the driver.

They then jumped behind the wheel themselves to get the truck off the bridge as the fire was simultaneously extinguished.

As the truck drove, a fire engine drove directly alongside it, with a hose being pointed at the back compartment of the truck in a bid to put the fire out.

‘I think the firefighters managed to avoid quite a bit of disruption,’ a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade told Daily Mail Australia.

The firefighters drove the truck off the bridge and managed to completely extinguish the fire after it was parked on the side of the freeway.

Despite his stressful commute, the driver of the truck was reported to be okay, and did not suffer any injuries.

After the fire had gone out, the truck was towed away.
