A 34-year-old man has died in a freak crash after he and his truck were struck by a passing crane while on the side of a busy freeway on Tuesday morning.
The man is understood to have stepped out of the vehicle while it was in the emergency lane on Ring Road at Deer Park, north-west of Melbourne about 7.30am.

It’s understood the man’s vehicle (pictured) was hit by the crane after the driver pulled over into the emergency lane to check its load
The 34-year-old was allegedly checking the truck’s load of gardening supplies with the driver when the passing crane swiped the side of their truck, killing him instantly.
No one else was injured in the incident and the man is yet to be identified.
Police remained at the scene to investigate what led to the collision, with only one lane of traffic open.
Motorists have been advised by VicRoads to avoid the area, and it’s not known when the road will reopen completely.
