Trump immigration lawyer: I could be fired for immigration criticism

  • Attorney Michael Wildes said ‘I could get fired’ for my remarks
  • Earlier this week he said the child detention centers are ‘reminiscent of detention centers of Nazi Germany’
  • Wildes defended Melania Trump’s immigration status in 2016 and represented Donald Trump on immigration issues tied to his Miss Universe pageant
  • He praised Melania Trump’s visit to the U.S.-Mexico border

The attorney who defended Melania Trump’s immigration status in 2016 and compared the centers housing migrant children separated from their parents to Nazi concentration camps said he could be fired for his words.

Attorney Michael Wildes told MSNBC on Thursday he doesn’t care if the Trump family fires him for opposing President Donald Trump’s ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policy.

Wildes, who represented Trump on immigration issues related to the Miss Universe pageant, said on Tuesday the centers housing kids are ‘reminiscent of detention centers of Nazi Germany.’

‘The inhumanity of what we see is reminiscent of detention centers of Nazi Germany, of the slave trade,’ he said on ‘Fox and Friends.’ ‘We can do better when we try to figure out this problem. Let’s not forget, this problem needs to be fixed because the greatest risk-takers and greatest entrepreneurs historically have been immigrants in this country.’

But on Thursday Wildes applauded the first lady’s trip to the U.S.-Mexico border and said she was ‘leading by example’ with her visit to child detention centers.

Then he added that America needs ‘all hands on deck’ to fix Trump’s policy immigration policy.

MSNBC host Kasie Hunt questioned his criticism of the Trump family.

‘I’m a little surprised that someone who works for, is employed by Melania Trump — by the Trump family — is able to speak so freely about the president’s policies,’ she said.

‘Me too,’ Wildes replied, ‘and I could be fired.’

He said he’s influenced by his background.

‘I’m also a Jew who does not like the visuals I have been witnessing in the last few days,’ he said.

He then compared the Melania Trump to the Biblical Queen Esther, whose saving of the Jews is celebrated during Purim.

‘If you reflect on the story of Queen Esther, there is a reason to believe that she is the president’s wife and that she brings something to the table herself,’ Wildes said. ‘I can’t speak for her nor will I speak of my conversations, but I have to tell you that this is nuanced by her presence.’
