Trump refused to tell PM his decision on Iran nuclear deal

Donald Trump bluntly snubbed a plea from Theresa May to be told his plans for the Iran nuclear deal last night.

The Prime Minister asked for details of the US president’s intentions over the controversial agreement when they held talks in New York.

But Mr Trump rejected the request.

The awkward exchange was revealed by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as he spoke to journalists overnight.

Mr Trump attacked the Iranian regime during his explosive address to the UN General Assembly yesterday, threatening to tear up the nuclear deal struck between the two powers.

He branded the deal – which saw the Iranians agree to forfeit much of their ability to enrich uranium in return to an end to economic sanctions – an ’embarrassment’ and ‘one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into’.

But the British government backs the deal, and UK ministers are understood to have privately pressed the Trump administration to stick with it.

Despite the astonishing attack from one of Britain’s closest allies, Mrs May went ahead with sit-down talks with the Iranian President in New York.

Mr Tillerson told reporters in New York that he believed the President had made a decision on what to do about the Iran nuclear deal but had not ‘shared that with anyone externally’.

‘Prime Minister May asked him if she – if he would share it with her, and he said no,’ Mr Tillerson said.

‘So I think, as the President has always indicated, he will let you know when he thinks it’s useful to let you know, and he doesn’t share his forward planning with people. But he, I believe, has made a decision.’

Mr Trump also urged the UK to ramp up pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Speaking at the UN yesterday, President Rouhani defended the deal and said the US would ‘destroy its own credibility’ as a negotiating partner if it withdraws from the accord.

In a clear swipe at Mr Trump, Mr Rouhani said he hoped diplomacy would not be undermined by ‘rogue newcomers to the world of politics.’
