‘Just for a little change of pace!’ Donald Trump retweets UFC’s ‘best KO’ of 2019 poll after calling his response to attack that set fire to part of U.S. embassy in Baghdad ‘the anti-Benghazi’
- Trump blasted Iran for propping up the militia that attacked America’s embassy in Baghdad, Iraq on Tuesday
- Minutes later he promoted an Ultimate Fighting Championship poll ‘[j]ust for a little change of pace’
- The leader in the ‘best KO’ of 2019 poll is Jorge Masvidal, who called the president ‘a bad motherf***er’ last month
- Promoting professional brawlers stood in sharp contrast with the fighting U.S. Marines were doing in Baghdad as thousands tried to overrun the embassy
After a day of venting at Iran, embracing Russia and advocating for gun owners, Donald Trump thought his Twitter audience needed a New Year’s Eve ‘change of pace’: a poll about Ultimate Fighting Championship stars.
‘Who had the best KO of 2019?’ the poll asked, listing mixed martial artists Jorge Masvidal, Niko Price, Aleksandar Rakić and Valentina Shevchenko.
The emphasis on bare-knuckle brawlers stood in contrast to the scene in Baghdad, where violent pro-Iran protesters and attackers stormed the U.S. embassy compound on Tuesday, set walls ablaze and chanted ‘Death to America!’ in retaliation for American airstrikes.
Masvidal, who led the UFC poll hours later, is the same fighter who called the president ‘a bad motherf***er’ after he scored a technical knockout in a November fight Trump attended in New York City.
The prize that night was a ‘Baddest motherf***er in the Game’ championship belt
President Donald Trump, pictured last week in West Palm Beach, Florida, interrupted his hard-edge tweeted on New Year’s Eve to promote a poll about Ultimate Fighting Champion stars
The big winner in the poll seeemed to be mixed martial artist Jorge Masvidal
While Trump was promoting professional brawlers, U.S. Marines in Baghdad were handling paramilitary forces who attacked the American embassy
‘No matter what your views are on Trump as a president, guy’s a bad motherf***er, man,’ Masvidal said afterward. ‘The money that he’s made, the obstacles that he’s conquered, he’s a bad motherf***er in his own way, you know? ‘No matter what your political views are.’
The president had blasted Tehran’s mullahs minutes earlier, saying he would hold them ‘fully responsible’ for the attack that forced the Pentagon to send 100 Marines as reinforcements to the embassy in Iraq’s capital.
‘The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is, & has been for hours, SAFE! Many of our great Warfighters, together with the most lethal military equipment in the world, was immediately rushed to the site. Thank you to the President & Prime Minister of Iraq for their rapid response upon request,’ Trump tweeted Tuesday evening.
‘Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!’ he added.
In a third tweet he called his administration’s response to the attack ‘The Anti-Bengahzi!’
That was a jab at how Barack Obama’s administration responded to the 2012 jihadi attack on a diplomatic compound in northern Libya that left four Americans dead. The tweet, which misspelled ‘Benghazi,’ was ultimately replaced.
The UFC poll came with a video promoting four fighters and asking the public to choose their favorite knockout of the year
Masvidal is the same UFC star who called Trump ‘a bad motherf***er’ last month after a NEw York City fight taht the president attended
In the Tuesday attack militia members with the Popular Mobilization Forces swarmed the high-security compound, breaking down the main door and setting a fire in the reception area, forcing U.S. soldiers inside the embassy to fire tear gas, stun grenades and warning shots. In the chaos 62 of the thousands of fighters were injured, the PMF claimed.
U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller was on leave at the time of the attack and embassy staff had already been evacuated before Marines were besieged behind the bullet-proof glass and on rooftops.
The attack on the embassy came in retaliation for American airstrikes Sunday night on the Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah. The strikes killed two dozen fighters, and were a response to last week’s killing of an American contractor at a U.S. base in Kirkuk.
