Trump supporters erupt into spontaneous chants for ‘Space Force’

President Donald Trump’s supporters have launched a new chant to go alongside ‘Lock Her Up!’ and ‘Build That Wall’ – erupting in unison at Trump’s pitch for a new Space Force.

Trump signed a new directive ordering the Defense Department this week to begin establishing a Space Force as the sixth branch of the US armed forces, describing it as critical for the U.S. dominating space in the future.

Trump pitched the proposal at campaign rally in Duluth, casting the move as in keeping with the nation’s pioneer spirit and westward expansion, and national glory.

‘We’re standing on the shoulders of great American patriots who put down the railroads, built up the highways, and dug out the most amazing Panama Canal, losing thousands of lives in doing it,’ Trump said.

‘They crossed the oceans, trekked the deserts, scaled the mountains, created the most incredible republic the world has ever seen. And you know what? Our republic today is prouder and greater than it ever was before,’ Trump said.

‘Our beautiful ancestors won two world wars, defeated fascism and communism, and put a man on the face of the moon,’ Trump continued.  ‘And I think you saw the other day, we’re reopening NASA. We’re going to be going to space,’ he said to applause.

At that point, the crowd erupted into chants of “Space Force! Space Force! Space Force!’

Then Trump described the idea, although the only argument he engineered for the idea is that ‘we need it.’

‘Space Force. Space Force. So we have the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines, the Coast Guard. But we have the Air Force. Now we’re going to have the Space Force because it’s a whole — we need it. We need it,’ Trump said.

‘As long as we are proud of who we are and what we are fighting for, we will never, ever fail. There is no place like our place. There is no place,’ Trump said.

Not everyone is over the moon about the plan.

Retired NASA Astronaut Mark Kelly called it a ‘dumb idea’.

‘This is a dumb idea,’ Kelly, who has travelled to space four times and is the identical twin brother of fellow former astronaut Scott Kelly, tweeted.

‘The Air Force does this already. That is their job. What’s next, we move submarines to the 7th branch and call it the ‘under-the-sea force?’

In his post, Kelly was referring to the Air Force Space Command, a space-focused group that has come under a number of names over the years.

‘The president told a US general to create a new Space Force as 6th branch of military today, which generals tell me they don’t want,’ tweeted Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, who went to space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia.

‘Thankfully the president can’t do it without Congress because now is NOT the time to rip the Air Force apart. Too many important missions at stake,’ he wrote.

WHAT IS DONALD TRUMP’S ‘SPACE FORCE’ DIRECTIVE?

US President Donald Trump announced plans for a service branch aimed at ensuring American dominance in space this week.

Trump pleaded to revive the country’s flagging efforts in space, return to the moon and eventually send a manned mission that would reach Mars.

The president framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want ‘China and Russia and other countries leading us’.

His directive will task the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing the Space Force as the sixth branch of the US armed forces.

‘When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,’ Trump said.

He added: ‘We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal. It is going to be something. So important’
