Trump tells Piers Morgan he ‘overreacted’ when he stormed off British TV over Meghan

Donald Trump criticized Piers Morgan for the way he lost his job in British TV last year, according to audio of their controversial interview obtained by DailyMail.com, saying he should not have clashed with a weatherman during an on-air row about Meghan Markle.

A 30-second trailer for Morgan’s new program shows Trump apparently storming out of the interview.

But the former president’s aides say it was deceptively edited to create the impression that their good natured meeting ended on a sour note.

And an audio clip from their exchange even shows Trump saying he thought Morgan should have handled things differently when he came under fire for publicly criticizing Markle.

The former president lays out his admiration for the Queen and his disdain for her grandson Prince Harry.

The new show is entitled Piers Morgan Uncensored.

‘I chose the title because I last my lost job, at the Good Morning Britain show,’ said Morgan in the exchange.’

Trump answered: ‘I thought you overreacted by the way.’

‘Well, I’ll tell you what happened,’ said Morgan, before Trump cuts him off, accusing him of punching down.

‘The guy was a stiff.’

And Trump expressed his admiration for the Queen before criticizing Markle and the views she expressed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. 'And for this young woman to go out and criticize her, and really knock the hell out of her ... I thought that was so disrespectful.'

Morgan stormed off the set of Good Morning Britain last year after a dispute in which he said he did not ‘believe a word’ of Meghan’s claims about the Royal Family in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Weatherman Alex Beresford attracted his anger after saying: ‘I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off.

‘She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has but yet you continue to trash her.’

Trump issued a statement on Thursday afternoon saying Morgan had got caught ‘red-handed’ with the edited trailer, and that the weatherman had made him look like a fool.

‘Piers got caught red-handed, and the interview that I rather enjoyed doing is now in shambles,’ he said.

‘I especially enjoyed talking about the 2020 presidential election fraud and his big mistake on the way he walked off his show when the “weatherman” made him look like a fool. I never walked out of my interviews with him, he’s easy, but he tried to make it look like I did.

‘Unlike others, I don’t believe Piers is a complete slimeball, but he lost a lot of credibility.’

A source close to Trump said the former president was unimpressed with his latest meeting with Morgan.

‘Piers Morgan used an interview with President Trump to whine about being fired, and then trump mocked him for it,’ said the source.

‘The show’s called “Piers Morgan Uncensored” according to Piers, but it obviously isn’t unedited.’

Audio obtained by DailyMail.com reveals that rather than storming off set, the two men ended their interview in cordial style after more than an hour.

‘That was a great interview,’ said Morgan. ‘Thank you very much.’

Earlier Morgan lays out the row that led to his departure, describing his anger at the way Markle described the British royal family in the famous Oprah interview.

In it Markle claimed she had married Prince Harry in secret ahead of their public ceremony, that her life as a royal had left her suicidal and that she had encountered racist attitudes.

‘I thought the attacks on the Royal family were a disgrace,’ said Morgan.

Trump agreed, saying he was a ‘big fan of the Queen.

‘So let me ask you what you would have done,’ said Morgan, describing how he faced censure for his public criticism of Markle.

‘So then it turns out Meghan Markle writes to my boss at ITV, basically demanding my head on a plate.

‘And the next day I’m told I’ve either got to apologize … even though it was clear she wasn’t telling the truth … or I’d have to leave my job. Now what would you have done?’

‘I would have left,’ said Trump, ‘but I wouldn’t have attacked the weatherman. you know.’

He goes on to say that he has never been a fan of Markle.

‘I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose,’ he said.

‘And I think he’s an embarrassment. And I think when she spoke badly of the royal family – particularly the queen – you know I met the Queen?’

He described how he was meant to meet the Queen for 20 minutes.

‘And it turned out to be more than an hour, substantially, because she liked me and I liked her,’ he said. ‘And she let it be known she liked me and I let it be known…’

He went on to described his admiration for a woman who had reigned for 70 years.

‘Has she ever made a mistake? She’s an incredible woman,’ said Trump

‘And for this young woman to go out and criticize her, and really knock the hell out of her … I thought that was so disrespectful.’

Morgan responded: ‘I felt genuinely furious.’

‘Well I thought you were right about these things,’ said Trump. ‘I just didn’t like the way you handled it. Is that OK?’

His full interview with Trump will air on the premiere episode of ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored’ on April 25 and will be played on Fox Nation in the US, Talk TV in the UK, and Sky News Australia.

The trailer for the interview also shows Morgan asking Trump tough questions about his unproven claims of election fraud.

‘It was a free and fair election. You lost,’ Morgan says in another moment. ‘Only a fool would think that,’ Trump, who appears to be glistening with sweat, shoots back. ‘I do now, yeah.’

‘I don’t think you’re real,’ Trump tells Morgan.

Morgan has said that he and Trump have an almost 15-year friendship starting when Morgan won Celebrity Apprentice in 2008.
