TV vox pop about Hurricane Irma goes viral

A TV vox pop has gone viral after the host didn’t bargain for interviewing a well-informed member of the public.

Vox pop interviews are often known for selecting people with uninformed or uncommunicative answers.

But when a Fox News reporter approached two people on Sunday morning in Miami Beach to ask them about Hurricane Irma, he received just the opposite.

‘What do you think about the storm, the power and the risk to your own safety?’ the reporter asks as he walks towards them.

Rather than a typical answer of ‘scared’ or ‘nervous’, the man in glasses answers: ‘Well at this point I’m very relieved to discover that as we speak the eye of the storm is practically due south of us by 220 miles because it’s crossing the 80th meridian.

‘Which is 80 degrees west longitude, so I’m not so worried because it’s so far away and it’s bearing as of 8pm.’

The reporter then corrects him by saying: ‘Westbound.’

The member of the public nods in reply, but he’s not done yet.

‘Well not just bearing westbound, it was 275 degrees,’ he continues.

‘That’s only one-fifteenth above due west toward true north, so this thing is moving and has been moving in a very westerly direction and because it’s several hundred miles south, the risks are less.

‘I’m not worried. I don’t think it’s going to get much worse than we’re seeing right here.’

The moment was shared on Twitter by Barstool News. It’s been liked more than 242,000 times and has more than 100,000 retweets.

And Twitter users couldn’t seem to get enough of the interviewee’s reply.

‘[The reporter] had [to] dip outta there so quick…you know the producer was in his ear like ABORT,’ wrote one user.

‘Schooled the reporter and blew hype job into bits and pieces,’ tweeted another.

And one Twitter user joked that he could imagine what the newsroom thought of their interviewee: ‘That man is not helping us sow fear in order to boost ratings. Cut him off quickly!’
