Arguably one of the most iconic images in film history is the moment the Grady twins appear in the hallway to haunt little Danny Torrance in The Shining.

Even though the twins, played by Lisa and Louise Burns, were only in the film for one scene, their presence has become synonymous with the groundbreaking horror movie and they are still referenced regularly in pop culture.

Nearly 45 years after the film was released, the Grady twins have been sharing updates with fans on Facebook through their account the Shining Twins and while they still look identical to each other, they look very different.

With a dream breakout role like The Shining, it seemed like the Burns twins had a golden ticket to the big screen for the rest of their lives, but instead, they opted for a different path.

In an interview with Daily Mail in 2015, Lisa revealed that she decided to become a lawyer while Louise is a published scientist.

When asked about their experience on the set of The Shining, they said they loved it.

‘Everyday felt like we’d been invited to a very exclusive party and we were the youngest, luckiest people to be there,’ they added.

‘Stanley wanted us on set every single day, so between scenes we would play with Danny and Jack,’ Louise added.

The girls were 11 at the time of filming Now the women are in their 50s

The twins are unrecognizable from their infamous scene in The Shining, released nearly 45 years ago

They recalled their fond memories working with stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and director Stanley Kubrick.

The twins revealed that Nicholson was a stark contrast from his character Jack Torrance.

He dropped the creepy persona once cameras stopped rolling and even acted as a father figure to the girls at the time.

Even though they were 11 years old when they acted in the film, the experience has stayed with them through adulthood.

The women have remained active in the horror-fan community, attending conventions and frequently posting on their social media accounts about the genre.

They shared a post in November on their joint Facebook account, The Shining Twins, at a screening for the Shine On Documentary.

The documentary was narrated by Martin Sheen and directed by Paul King. The film featured interviews with The Shining’s art director Les Tomkins, producer Jan Harlan, and Kubrick’s daughter Katharina. The women also shared a photo at the premiere with Tomkins.

In 2023, they traveled to Comic Con in Northern Ireland for a panel discussion on the film, where they revealed they were cast during an open call.

In the original novel written by Stephen King, the Grady girls are eight and ten years old. However, the film adaptation changed their characters to be twins, making the scene even creepier.

They also spoke to Kubrick’s notorious perfectionism and revealed that he took almost a week to stage the scene where the two twins were lying in the hallway covered in blood.

They explained that the costume department only had one set of dresses, so the scene had to be done in one shot.

The twins also admitted that when they filmed The Shining, they were just hoping for a box office win and could’ve never imagined the staying power it had.

The hallway scene has been parodied and referenced numerous times over the last four and a half decades.

Family Guy parodied The Shining multiple times, including an episode where Stewie Griffin runs over the twins with his tricycle. The Simpsons even dedicated an entire episode to parodying the film.

The scene has defined Halloween costumes, with tutorials flooding Pinterest and YouTube on how to recreate the blue dresses.

Even though they’ve moved away from the spotlight, the original Grady girls, Lisa and Louise, have inspired countless recreations and parodies of their infamous scene from the iconic horror film.
