Twist in case of woman, 24, accused of kidnapping a 14-year-old girl as 39-year-old man charged

A second person has been charged after the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl who police say was plied with drugs in a hotel room and threatened with a blowtorch.

Earlier this month Elham Naaman, 24, was taken into custody over and accused of luring the girl to a party before holding the teen against her will at a unit in Greenacre in Sydney’s south-west, as well as various other locations.

Police alleged the teen was repeatedly sexually and physically assaulted by a group of men in a horrific ordeal that lasted for ‘several hours’.

After further investigation by the NSW Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, a 39-year-old man has also been charged.

A vehicle he was travelling in was stopped in Sydney’s Ryde at about 11.30am on Tuesday, where a subsequent search allegedly locate the drug methylamphetamine. 

‘The man was taken to Ryde Police Station where he was charged with take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, steal from the person value less than $2,000, and three counts of supply prohibited drug,’ police said. 

‘He was refused bail to appear in Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday.’ 

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old from Berkshire Park in Sydney’s north-west, who has also been charged, appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday via video link in her prison greens, playing with her hair and smiling. 

Naaman crossed her arms and gave the magistrate the name of her new lawyer, Gazi Abbas – smiling widely when he came on screen.

In court on Tuesday, the young woman appeared before the judge over a separate incident in which she allegedly set fire to a studio apartment in Hamilton, in Newcastle’s western suburbs, on August 14 – causing $30,000 worth of damage. 

Police allege she deliberately lit the fire in an an attempt to destroy evidence of a stabbing – allegedly writing a text to an unknown person which said: ‘I lit a hotel room on fire to cover your a**e’.

She moved her long hair behind her ears, flicked it in front of her shoulders, behind her shoulders, and back in front of her ears again before she was told she would enter a plea in Newcastle Local Court on October 28.  

Naaman is also accused of stealing goods in custody in Riverwood, south Sydney, in February, though the nature of the goods remain unclear. She will reappear in Sutherland Local Court on October 26. 

The magistrate made reference to the alleged kidnapping incident during Tuesday’s appearance.

Naaman was arrested in Berkshire Park on October 3 for her involvement in the alleged kidnap of the teenage girl.

Police allege she met the 14-year-old at a party, where the pair added each other on social media and planned to party together in a hotel room in Parramatta, the Daily Telegraph reported. 

But court documents state the 14-year-old was allegedly held against her will at the hotel, a unit in Greenacre in Sydney’s south-west, and other locations where she was allegedly sexually and physically assaulted by a group of men.

Naaman has not been charged with sexual assault. 

Police allege Naaman stole the teenager’s iPhone and threatened her with a blowtorch held up to her face, setting alight the hijab-like scarf she was wearing.

Naaman was refused bail on October 5 at Bankstown Local Court after a magistrate heard of her ‘violent’ criminal history, which included motor vehicle theft, common assault and destroying property. 

Her then-solicitor Upol Amin said at the time that she would defend the charges. 

Naaman was again refused bail by the magistrate in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday. 

Investigations into the kidnapping are continuing and further arrests are expected.
