Twitter users vent fury at lack of female Grammy nominees

The nominees for the 60th annual Grammy Awards have left a number of social media users up in arms.

The list of possible winners for the prestigious honors was unveiled on Tuesday morning by singer Andra Day during an appearance on CBS This Morning, and while many have applauded the diversity of nominees, many have been left exasperated by the lack of women up for top prizes.

New Zealand singer Lorde, 21, is the lone woman in the list for the show’s centerpiece honor, Album of the Year, going up against Jay-Z (4:44), Childish Gambino (Awaken My Love!), Kendrick Lamar (Damn), and Bruno Mars (24K Magic).

Lone leading lady: Lorde is the only woman nominated for the Album of the Year award at this year’s Grammys

The category has already received plenty of attention since this year’s list marks the first time in 19 years that no white men are up for the award – the last time being in 1999, when every nominee was female.

A number of other categories similarly boast just one female in the ranks, including Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Album, Best Country Album, Best Dance/Electronic Album among others.

Yet things are even worse elsewhere in the list of nods, such as in the Record of the Year category, where no women at all are included.

The artists up for the awards of Best Rock Album, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Metal Performance are similarly all male.

But this isn’t to say there are no female-dominated categories on the list, as Best Pop Solo Performance is a competition between four superstar women and Ed Sheeran. The Best New Artist award nominees are three women and two men.

Katy Perry and Demi Lovato, who both had albums eligible for nods, were shut out, however, leading to many Twitter users claiming they were cheated.

‘Demi? Selena? Ariana? Katy? Nicki? Where are the women that deserved to be nominated?’ raged one user, but others shared photos of the snubbed pop starlets saying they ‘deserve better.’

Another wrote: ‘Y’all really expect me to believe that women didn’t show out for music last year??? Because the lack of women nominated makes no sense!!’
