The press service of Russia’s National Guard said suspicions initially focused on a 36-year-old foreigner.

‘The man aroused the attention of private security officers on Makarenko Street,’ reported RBC citing the National Guard.

‘At the sight of a patrol car, the man abruptly turned aside and quickened his pace.

‘He tried to discard the light-grey bundles from his jacket pocket.’

The man and his friend were identified as British citizens.

They are believed to be teaching English at a language school in the Russian capital.
