Two children have survived a horror head-on crash that killed their mother.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Sturt and Old Sturt Highways in South Australia’s Riverland region shortly before 7.30pm on Tuesday night after a B-Double truck and car collided.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old woman from the region, died at the scene despite desperate attempts by paramedics to revive her.

The tragedy occurred on a dangerous stretch of road, according to a local who commented on the South Australia Police Facebook page.

‘I know exactly where it is and have seen a few near misses myself,’ the woman commented.

The woman’s death brings South Australia’s road toll to 28 this year, compared to 17 at the same time in 2018.

The tragedy ended a horror day on the Sturt Highway in the region after an earlier two car crash near the South Australian/Victorian border closed the road for three hours.

Both drivers were seriously injured in the crash near Yamba on Tuesday morning, 53 kilometres from Tuesday night’s fatality.

The driver of a white Hilux ute, a 37-year-old man from Northfield and the driver of a black Subaru, a 48-year-old woman from Mildura, were taken to the local hospital before airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Both are believed to be in serious but stable conditions.

Adding to the emergencies, SA Ambulance Service’s internet network was down for most of the day, which affected non-critical electronic communications.

‘I think it’s really important to state that our triple zero core handling and dispatch of ambulances wasn’t affected at all, so there’s been no public safety issues today,’ chief executive David Place told the ABC.
