Two fearsome male Grizzlies square up for a fight during mating season in Canada

This is the striking moment that a pair adolescent bears begin brawling – as they train to vie for female attention.

The pair of young male North American Brown Bears – more commonly known as grizzly bears – are being housed in British Columbia Provincial Park, Canada, and fought several times in a two-hour scrap.

The smaller bear was up for a fight despite only weighing around 125kg (275kg), according to wildlife photographer Jenny Stevens.

But this pair are five-years-old, meaning that they are not old enough to attract female bears just yet

Stevens, a 76-year-old retired insurance broker from Ontario, said: ‘There was a mature female not far away, but she had no interest in them.

‘The large mature male commenced courting her when the two younger bears left.

‘At first, it upset me to see such viciousness, but it appeared they did not want to kill each other.

‘Now and then fur flew, but I believe it really was serious practice for what awaits them in a few years.

‘Males normally have to fight to win a female during mating season.’
