Two inmates on trash duty escape Georgia prison by sprinting away

Two inmates were caught on camera escaping on foot from a Georgia prison.

Inmates Shane Joe Saip, 38, and Willie Ames Driver, 24, were throwing out trash under the careful watch of a supervisor when they suddenly sprinted off the prison lawn and successfully escaped Houston County Jail on June 4.

A two-day manhunt was launched for the duo after they were caught on video bolting across the prison property and towards a nearby apartment complex.

The shocking video footage shows the two men throw out trash in a dumpster on Monday June 4 around 8pm with a supervisor behind them.

After tossing out the garbage they turn around the corner of the giant dumpster and are for a second out of view from their supervisor.

In that second they take off running at high speed at the exact same time.

An outdoor camera filmed the two sprinting across the open prison lawn towards a wooded area.

‘Some of the bags were extra heavy, so they went around to the back of the dumpster instead of throwing them over the top. They took off on foot toward the woods behind the jail,’ Houston County sheriff’s Major Alan Everidge said.

‘Inmates go out of the jail every day to work. It’s a risk when we have inmate labor. The potential is always there,’ he added.

Immediately afterwards a search team of 50 officers was deployed to locate the inmates.

At first all searchers could find were their green inmate jumpsuits and boots, meaning the two had dropped down to their underwear in their frantic escape.

Driver was found around 10pm Monday evening after he ran to a nearby apartment complex and asked to use a resident’s phone.

He was arrested in just his undergarments and socks.

Fifteen hours later Houston County deputies captured Saip around 11am on June 5 after he was discovered hiding in a barn around 3miles away from the jail and was reported by witnesses.

Deputies had checked out that very barn three times, according to WGXA, but Saip managed to avoid them.

Earlier in the day residents of Olive Place Apartments complex reported Saip breaking into several homes, but he fled the scene before deputies arrived.

He was eventually cornered at the barn.

‘He came out, gave up. His arrest was made without incident. No injuries to anyone involved,’ Everidge said to Macon.com.

‘He was tired, cut up a little bit. He’d been through a lot of briers and bushes,’ he added.

Now the two inmates face charges of one count of conspiracy to commit a crime and one count of escape following their bold escape.

Saip was arrested in April for multiple burglary charges as well as firearms possession and methamphetamine possession.

He now faces additional time behind bars following his new charges.

He made his first court appearance Wednesday June 6. It is not clear when his second court appearance will be.

Driver was originally jailed on a felony identity fraud charge and several misdemeanors. It is not clear if he has appeared in court yet.
