The shooting and stabbing came just one day after the country’s top police chief, Cressida Dick, said youth knife violence is at the worst level she has ever seen it.

The Met Police Commissioner, who joined the police more than 35 years ago, told Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee: ‘I’d have to say that the last couple of years undoubtedly have been the highest and most worrying levels I think in my service.’

Hours after her comments six people were stabbed in London during another night of carnage as two-17-year-old boys and four men aged 18 to 24 were knifed in separate attacks.

Just a month ago police chiefs up and down the country declared Britain’s knife crime epidemic a ‘national emergency’ and demanded more funding to help combat it.

Shocking new statistics last month showed that 41 per cent of knife crime offenders are now aged between 15 and 19.
