Two men are killed after their light plane was spotted ‘flying sideways’ before it came crashing to the ground

  • Two men have died in a light aircraft crash near Matiland, in New South Wales 
  • The bodies of a 44-year-old man and 71-year-old man were found on Saturday 
  • Emergency services were called to a property in Woodville about 12.20pm 

Two men have died in a light aircraft crash after their plane was spotted ‘flying sideways’.

Emergency services were called to a property in Woodville, about 10 kilometres north of Maitland in New South Wales, following reports of a crash about 12.20pm on Saturday. 

The bodies of a 44-year-old man and a 71-year-old man were found at the property on Patterson Road.

Doug, the witness who phoned emergency crews, said he saw the aircraft’s wings fold up moments before the crash.  

‘I heard this little ultraplane come overhead here. The wing got up, and just as I looked up… he’s flying sideways,’ he told Nine News

‘[I said] ”this bloke’s in trouble”. Just as I said that, the wings… folded up and he just spiralled to the ground.’

‘Everything was hunky-dory there until the wing came up. It’s just so simple how these things can happen.’

A crime scene was established by police officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash has begun and the Sports Aviation Federation of Australia is assisting with inquiries. 

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
