Two people have died when a small plane flown by a college student crashed near Daytona Beach, Florida on Wednesday.

The crash took place at around 10:00am on Wednesday near the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market.

The pilot, a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a pilot examiner with the Federal Aviation Administration, were killed.

The identities of the victims have yet to be released.

News of the crash was reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

The student was flying a Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft, according to News 6 TV. 

‘Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to all those affected by this devastating loss,’ university President P. Barry Butler said in a statement.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said it had notified federal agencies of the crash, prompting an investigation.

‘Embry-Riddle is cooperating fully with all appropriate law enforcement and regulatory authorities,’ Butler said.
