Two pipe bombs found in Philadelphia within 48 hours

Two pipe bombs are found discarded half a mile apart in Pennsylvania, but authorities do not believe they are the work of a ‘serial bomber’

Two pipe bombs have been discovered in Pennsylvania within 48 hours, but authorities said they do not believe it is the work of a ‘serial bomber’.

According to a press statement from the Caln Township Police Department, a caller reported an explosion on Monday in the area of the railroad underpass at South Caln Road and Olive Street in Philadelphia. 

Officers who responded to the scene of the explosion said they located a device that appeared to have been detonated.

That incident took place around 3pm, approximately 24 hours before postal carrier, Dion Carotenuto (pictured), located an undetonated pipe bomb at 14th Avenue and Olive Street

Carotenuto said he immediately reported it to police. 

‘Both devices appear to be “homemade” and similar in size and construction,’ officers said.  

The locations are within about a half-mile apart, police said, adding that they are searching the area for any other possible devices. 

Police urged residents ‘who see something, to say something,’ and to immediately call 911 if they find a suspicious device. 

‘Please do not attempt to handle the device and maintain an extra safe distance,’ police said. 

Authorities said they have not identified a motive or suspects.
