  • The incident occured at 12.40am in Carrum Downs, and injured a female officer

A manhunt is underway for the driver of a grey BMW X5 who rammed two police cars at a McDonald’s car park in Melbourne’s southeast Friday morning.

Horrifying footage shows the vehicle’s reckless escape from being boxed in by five other cars, hitting a female officer who was standing nearby in the process, Herald Sun reports.

The BMW reversed forcefully into a 4WD police car which had just pulled up at its rear, before charging forward and ploughing through the front of a second police car.

The incident unfolded around 12.40am in Carrum Downs after police spotted the vehicle in the McDonald’s drive-through with mismatched plates.

Police are hunting the driver of a grey BMW X5 (centre) who rammed two police vehicles and injured an officer in Melbourne’s southeast shortly before 1am Friday morning

Two police cars closed in on the vehicle as officers attempted to speak with the driver.

The extensively damaged BMW, with licence plate AHO096, was last seen leaving the car park and travelling west along Ballarto Road, police said.

A female officer sustained minor injuries.

A male believed to have been a passenger in the BMW has been helping police with their investigation.

The driver could face automatic imprisonment and up to 20 years behind bars under the State’s tough new legislation designed to protect emergency service officers.

‘Offences like this will be covered by the new legislation and in time we hope that the sentences handed out for these types of offences provide an adequate deterrent for others who consider engaging in this type of dangerous behaviour,’ Police Association of Victoria’s Wayne Gatt said.

‘We are just thankful that our officers managed to avoid serious injury.’

‘They don’t deserve to be targeted in such a reckless manner for simply doing their job to protect the community.’
