Two teenage girls both 19, caught slipping cannabis to a boyfriend on a prison visit are spared jail

Two teenage girls who tried to smuggle cannabis into jail for an inmate have both gone free after it emerged one is now pregnant with his child.

Close friends Chantelle Revie and Shelby Parkinson, both 19, were arrested after being seen giving Daniel Hives goodbye hugs whilst sneaking the drugs into his tracksuit bottoms.

The pair had been visiting 22-year old Hives after he was held for an undisclosed offence at Category B Forest Bank prison in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Parkinson will complete 160 hours of unpaid work

Revie – who was Hives’ girlfriend – was responsible for handing him the drugs whilst Parkinson’s job was to make sure the package was secure and in place by patting his bottom.

Guards saw the switch being made on CCTV and recovered 14 separate wraps of cannabis. The prison value of the drugs would be £1,350.

At Manchester Crown Court, Revie, of Bamber Bridge, Preston who is now pregnant with Hives’ unborn baby and Parkinson of nearby Ribbleton both faced jail after they pleaded guilty to bringing a prohibited article into a prison.

But both hugged each other in the dock as they escaped with a six months jail suspended for two years after a judge said they should have been brought to court sooner. Hives has been freed since the incident on July 9 last year when the girls were just 18.

His baby with Revie is due in March next year.

Prosecutor Simon Barrett said: “Chantelle was the girlfriend of the inmate and she was responsible for taking the drugs into prison. Shelby Parkinson became aware of it and assisted with concealing the item in the waistband.

“The incident took place on Sunday 9 July last year at around 2pm. The two defendants went to see a prisoner at HMP Forest Bank, the prisoner was Daniel Hives. They were in the visiting area and appeared to staff to be nervous so they were watched on CCTV.

In mitigation defence lawyer Duncan Phillips said Revie was 14 weeks pregnant and her baby with Hives was due in March of next year.

“She became pregnant after she was released under investigation. After becoming pregnant, she then received a postal requisition almost a year after the offence. She was 18 at the time of this offence and is 19 years of age now.”

Sentencing Judge Martin Walsh told them: “This is not a case where there was a suggestion of undue pressure. You knew full well what you were doing.

“I am now faced with two defendants who were 18 at the time of the offence, one of them is now pregnant. There has been an unacceptable and inordinate delay in bringing these proceedings to justice.

“Anyone who traffics drugs into prison contributes to a situation that causes disruption in our institutions. Smuggling drugs into prison often leads to outbreaks of violence.

“You were 18 at the time of committing these offences. You are of previous good character. I want to make it crystal clear that had you been sentenced by me in a reasonable period of time, each of you would have gone straight to custody. Each of you were aware of the part you were playing in this trafficking.

“But there has been an inexplicable delay in these matters being brought to court. It is only because of the inordinate delay of these matters being brought to court that I feel I can suspend the custody.

“I want to make it clear to each of you that you have been very fortunate today. Ordinarily, you would have been going to custody but an exceptional case has been adopted in this matter.”

Revie was also ordered to undertake 30 days of rehabilitation activity and Parkinson will complete 160 hours of unpaid work.
