Two-thirds of workers think they would do a much better job than their boss, a poll has found. It also showed that more than a third reckon their employer is hopeless.

One in five said they planned to set up on their own, with running a pub or restaurant, web design, yoga instruction and fashion design among the most popular options.

Most admitted however that they lacked the financial means to go it alone, or did not have the confidence and contacts.

The poll of 1,500 full-time workers by mobile firm giffgaff found 54 per cent felt they had no prospect of career progression.

‘For many Brits, being their own boss is the ultimate goal and it’s easy to see why,’ said a giffgaff spokesman. ‘You don’t have to answer to anyone else and you can run things how you see fit. Having the cash to start seriously thinking about running your own business is a big hurdle – but it can become a reality by putting a bit aside little and often.’
