Tyler Adams has appeared to confirm that the United States will be part of the next Copa America.

Speaking ahead of Leeds United’s clash with Manchester City on Wednesday, the suspended midfielder discussed the idea of the USMNT building continuity – with the 2024 Copa America apparently an opportunity for the squad to do just that.

‘It’s very important that now we use these upcoming tournaments and upcoming games to continue to build this chemistry together,’ he said on NBC Sports.

‘One of the things we’ve lacked going into this first World Cup is it took us a long time to get our best players on the field and in camp together. Some of us were injured, some of us were not healthy, we missed out on the opportunity to maximize our time together.

‘Now leading into this World Cup, we have some big tournaments… we have the Nations League, we’re going to have the opportunity to play in the Copa America which is going to be huge for us,’ he continued.

‘If you can have your guys healthy in tournaments like that, you gain experience and hopefully some more young guys are coming through the pipeline right now.

The USA had the second-youngest squad in Qatar and lost in the Round of 16 to Holland.

But there were certainly positives to take away from the tournament as the USA successfully navigated a tricky group including Wales, England and Iran.

The team didn’t allow a goal from open play in the group stage and outplayed England en route to a hard-fought goalless draw with the Three Lions.

‘Going into the World Cup it was our job to go in there and try to change the way the world views American soccer,’ Adams said. ‘The standard wasn’t too high but hopefully after this World Cup and some good performances, people start to change the way they think about us.’

‘I think you’ve seen in the past the US has been praised for their mentality, but lacked the final product, or lacked the creativity, or lacked the technical ability. Whereas now, you can see that we’re developing an identity,’ he continued.

‘Although that’s not going to happen in just this three-year period, we’re trending in the right direction and now with so many young, exciting players playing in the top leagues around the world, this was a step in the right direction… we need to continue with this now.’

Playing in the South American-based Copa America would give the USA the chance to face the likes of World Cup winners Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador and more in competitive matches.

While the team is tested in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying and finished behind Canada and Mexico in the last qualifying cycle, it’s largely been limited to friendly matches with non-CONCACAF sides.

The national team’s apparent involvement in the tournament was reported on earlier this month.

The USA are not set to play again until March, as they’ll face Grenada and El Salvador in the Nations League.
