An Uber driver has smiled at reporters as he left court after pleading not guilty to negligent driving. 

Nazrul Islam, 31, was charged with negligent driving occasioning death after his passenger, a 30-year-old man, was killed in Sydney’s centre in June 2017.

Islam’s lawyer Ali Cheema entered a plea of not guilty in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday. 

The 31-year-old Uber driver from Bangladesh smiled as he left court after his bail was continued.

Police earlier alleged Islam dropped off his passenger at a set of lights near Bathurst Street around 3.15am on June 17 before the man fell onto the road and into the path of a bus when the car accelerated.

The passenger died at the scene.

Police allege there were multiple witnesses and video of the incident.

According to court papers, Islam has been in Australia on a bridging visa from Bangladesh for five years.

He has lived in Auburn for the past four years.

As a condition of bail, Islam surrendered his passport was ordered to stay away from international airports.

He is due to appear in court again on February 28.
